Wife Carrying Competition

by Eerik
Wife Carrying Competition

A deeply rooted priceless North European tradition of carrying one’s spouse through the hardships of life — embodied in an obstacle course of several proportions. A “wife” is a person who is not required to be female, married, financially-emotionally-legally-paralegally-illegally-spiritually or otherwise connected to the carrier, except physically during the “carrying”. The “carrying” can happen in many ways. Immediate, intermediate, and uppermediate approaches will be demonstrated by a semi-professional Estonian wife-carrier.

Moving with the Expressive Body

by Sofia & Jeremy
Moving with the Expressive Body

Participants will go through a series of mindful movement exercises: first to get connected to the body, breath and the space, and then in relation to the class group. We will create a safe environment to explore moving with eyes closed both in physical contact with the group and in relation to the nature around us. We will learn to trust through body language and physical expression. Through a series of safe sensory experiences, we will explore the environment at large and the landscape of bodies in the space. We will giggle, bond, investigate, support and care for one another and learn to do it through movement, which is so akin to what makes us unique as human beings. This class will draw from materials used in practices such as mindfulness meditation, contemporary dance, contact improvisation, somatic movement, and movement improvisation. No experience in dance needed—come with an open mind and a willingness to move.

by Stina
In-bodied Journaling: Get Moved To Write

In this workshop, participants will do activities, both movement- and writing-related, meant to help them un-earth the stories that the body would tell us if we’d only listen to it. Do simple movements and mindfulness activities together, and respond to a few writing prompts. We will share what we have written and discuss it with each other. In one activity, we do a special series of movements meant to help release an emotion and locate it in the body, and share our insights and reflections.

Sharpening Your Intuition with Yoga Nidra

by Victoria
Sharpening Your Intuition with Yoga Nidra

Yoga nidra is the practice of relaxing the body into a state of ‘sleep’ while keeping the mind fully alert. Move through the layers of the physical, mental, and intuitive body with guided imagery and visualizations. During the practice we activate our parasympathetic nervous system, which allows us to tune more clearly into our intuition and enhance creativity. Afterward, journal about and share insights from the practice.

Let’s Make a Pop Up Book!

by Heather & Lee
Let's Make a Pop Up Book!

Our publisher, Irrational Geographic, wants us to make an educational pop-up book about an as-yet unnamed, elusive and mysterious creature which morphologists believe to be covered in hot pink feathers! Pair up with a new friend to make a pop-up page about this creature’s habitat, diet, temperament, life cycle, social structure, mating habits, or anything else the world needs to know about this beautiful beast. Work collaboratively to creatively brainstorm and then cut, glue, draw, color, write, and manifest your ideas. Your majestic creation will then live forever in the final bound book and be available in years to come at Black Rock Public Library for thousands to enjoy.
